Today Apple announced that on June 26th, just three days after the June 24th release of the iPhone 4 that 1.7 million units had been sold world wide. Steve Jobs was quoted as saying, "This is the most successful product launch in Apple's history," he followed that up with an apology. "Even so, we apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply." Whether you are an Apple fanboy, an Apple hater or just the guy two doors down who just loves his Motorola StarTac; you have to admit that 1.7 million of anything sold in such a short amount of time is simply amazing. Admittedly, not all 1.7 millions phones were sold in just three days, those 1.7 million phones were sold from June 15th to June 26th or 12 days. Also not all 1.7 million iPhone 4's have been delivered yet. Total operating phones is still unknown, but we can probably assume that many of the 600,000 sold on day one were delivered. How many Apple had on-hand for "walk-in" purchases is also unknown; but one could also assume that it was a good size quantity.
While the iPhone 4 hasn't been without its problems and its detractors, nearly 1.7 million iPhones sold is just incredibly amazing. That's 142,000 units per day (over 12 days) sold. It's unlikely that pace will keep up, but it doesn't seem likely the pace will drop off considerably either. The perceived problems of the iPhone 4 don't really seem to be stopping people nor does it seem to be having a huge impact on reviews. Most folks seem to be, if anything, mildly annoyed at whatever problems they might be encountering.
I've not visited any of our local Apple Stores in Dallas since the iPhone 4 went on sale, but if it is anything like the iPhone 3G or the iPhone 3GS, lines continue to persist at all the stores - at least until the WE ARE OUT OF IPHONES announcement.
